StoriesSOLDIERS OF FORTUNEUpon leaving his second term, President Eisenhower left his people with a warning. Acknowledging the need for the vast army he had helped create, he also warned of the power of the “Industrial Military complex.” He warned that war was profitable and that the temptation to misuse power or be influenced by this machine would be great. He asked for our vigilance. Dr. Gonz Sure he may have been a raving lunatic, but that’s not the point. In what would later come to be known as Gonzo Journalism, this writer had a gift for melding fact and fiction in a way that made the works both captivating and somehow more honest. His quest was for the American dream, living in each moment unfiltered and unrestrained searching out and bringing to light those he felt stood against it and us. MLK He shared with us his dream for equality. His fire and eloquence would electrify a nation. As one of the key figures in the civil rights movement, he worked to end the racial injustice seen in America by peaceful means. His work earned him the Nobel peace prize by the age of 35 and, although his murder prevented him from seeing his “promise land” realized, his words still ring true today: “We must all live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” FULL FLAVORED We thought we’d try what has to be the best marketing scheme ever for this one. Sure it’s cool for Noir films but what other product can warn that it’s use can cause cancer, impotence, bad teeth, AND have people still insist that it’s a great idea. Also you may or may not be aware that some ingredients in cigarettes can also be found in other great products like hair remover, rat poison, pee, and rocket fuel. Yum! Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. THE ORIGINALS In the 1970’s a group of young surfers ignited the world of skateboarding with their ability, style, and attitude. Emulating their heroes in the water, they brought surf moves to the streets. They scoured neighborhoods for abandoned pools that would become their proving grounds. Doing it for themselves and for respect they pushed each other to become better. The fame and success would be welcome for some and discounted by others, but their stamp on the sport would be forever solidified. PROHIBITION In the 1920’s An American automotive pioneer introduced his flagship model modified to run off ethanol instead of gasoline. A prominent oil tycoon saw the fuel as unwelcome competition. It was his money and influence behind the temperance movement that “persuaded” them to move for the full prohibition of alcohol. Its effects would do little to dissuade alcohols social use and instead gave rise to organized crime. By the time prohibition was repealed, gasoline was the established fuel of the times and alternative fuels faded into the background until today. IMAGINE PEACE As a key figure of a controversial and highly influential rock band, it was ironically his outspokenness regarding world peace that earned him attention as an enemy of the United States. After the band split he never played for money again but performed at several rallies and events for his cause. He saw the absurdity of the media’s obsession with his personal life and used the coverage to promote his belief that peace was obtainable, if we wanted it. The choice is within each one of us. WELCOME TO MALIBU Something smells in Malibu and it isn’t success. Despite it’s wealth and beauty, the waters of Malibu on down to Long beach continually make the list of the top ten most polluted beaches in the country. Runoff and sewage leak into the bay contaminating the water. Although so far there’s no reports of mutants attacking or 3 eyed fish, we’re keeping our eyes open. ® 2008 Local God Enterprises LLC Contact |
